Almost everyday I get a question about Twitter -- What is it? How does it work?

Here's a video that does good job ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddO9idmax0o

Since I deal with business issues, let's focus on how Twitter supports business. Twitter allows you to communicate on a number of levels that weren't possible before. It can be used for customer service, market research, new product introductions, competitive intelligence, reputation management, and general corporate branding purposes.

Twitter is considered a 'micro-blog'. Because it only allows a stream of 140 characters, tweets have a high probably of being read immediately on receipt. This can be good ... or bad. Be careful of what you say. The good news is that it can be used to introduce a longer conversation by linking to a website or full blog entry.

Importantly, it provides the ability to track what's being said about your company online, which gives you the opportunity to respond quickly to bad news of neagative comments. This is a key reason why the bigger companies are looking at or using Twitter -- immediacy.

Whatever your reason, start by thinking small -- that is choose one reason, and work from there. If you want to track competitors, educate yourself about the search functions.

One last thing, educate yourself on how to integrate Twitter into your current technical environment. A few hours of your time here will save you many hours on a daily basis in the future. Give us a call if you want to know more.
